Changes in Turkish foreign policy towards Iran in the Davutoğlu era (2002 - 2012)
Marcinová, Slávka ; Karásek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Aslan, Emil (referee)
The principal aims of the research are to identify the nature and scope of Turkish foreign policy change towards Iran in the period 2002-2012 - the first ten years of the successive governments of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Then, individual sources of foreign policy change and their respective roles in shaping Turkish foreign policy toward Iran will be investigated. As the research is theoretically grounded in the subfield of foreign policy analysis known as foreign policy change, the reader is familiarized with a variety of different models used in the study of foreign policy change. In order to assess the relevance of the individual sources, an alternative explanatory model is designed. The application of the designed foreign policy model highlights the necessity of applying a wider approach in the quest to assess Turkish foreign policy change, taking into account the different domestic and international sources in order to achieve a comprehensive explanation that can evaluate the relative power of international and domestic political, economic, and ideational sources serving as its driving mechanisms. The role of economic factors - long seen as fundamental in shaping Turkey's foreign policy toward its neighbors - and the role of security concerns are subsequently identified as...
Analysis of U.S. foreign policy towards nuclear-armed states in South Asia
Freitag, Vojtěch ; Ludvík, Jan (advisor) ; Smetana, Michal (referee)
Nuclear testing conducted by India and Pakistan in 1998 raised concerns among members of the whole international community. United States under Bill Clinton administration were in the front line in the fight against spreading nuclear weapons and following the tests the U.S. condemned both states and imposed economic sanctions. India and Pakistan found themselves under strong international pressure and according to the global nuclear regime were banned from trade with nuclear materials and technology. However, the sanctions were soon lifted and United States enhanced their relationship with India and ultimately ended its nuclear isolation. In fact, the Indo-U.S. deal from 2008 basically legitimised Indian nuclear weapons program and integrated India into the global nuclear order. On the contrary, Pakistan remained excluded and similar deal with the United States seems unrealistic. This thesis explains the differences in the U.S. approach applying a modified neorealist theory, which emphasizes systematic influences and to some extent also an influence of the U.S. President on the resulting foreign policy. The thesis is conceived as a comparative analysis. Using analytical framework on three levels, structural, state and an individual level, important factors that had an effect on the improvement of...
The Role of Foro de São Paulo in Brazilian Foreign Policy: a neoclassical realist analysis
Novichkova, Anna ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
Institutional regional integration has become the main focus of Brazil's foreign policy during the administration of the Workers' Party 2003-2016. Why has Brazil decided to involve itself so deeply into the process of Latin American integration? The main objective of this single case study is twofold. First, applying the theory of neoclassical realism, this thesis aims to discuss all the driving forces (variables) behind Brazil's decision to make regional integration its top foreign policy priority since 2003. Second, it attempts to clarify that the São Paulo Forum, a continental network of the leftist political parties, should also be included into the set of driving forces behind the foreign policy choices in Brazil from 2003 to 2016. The following research question is put forward: What role does the São Paulo Forum play in Brazil's intensified involvement into regional integration during the period of the Workers` Party in power? Assessed through the congruence procedure and process tracing technique, the influence of the Forum is placed under the intervening variables of the neoclassical realist theory. The results of the study demonstrate that since the Workers' Party coming to power, its leader, Lula da Silva has used the directives, elaborated at the São Paulo Forum, to restructure,...
Explaining the Czech Foreign Policy Towards China (1992-2017)
Adamková, Petra ; Garlick, Jeremy Alan (advisor) ; Havlová, Radka (referee)
The presented master´s thesis aims to explain the Czech foreign policy towards China since 1992 to the year 2017. In order to analyse the approach, the author firstly carries out a literature review and introduces three levels of foreign policy analysis, i.e. system, (sub)state and individual. Key relevant phenomena are introduced and the stage is set for the case study. The empirical part of the presented thesis begins with a summary of the foreign policy of the Czech Republic towards the People´s Republic of China. To provide a complex picture, the Chinese interests in Czechia are described as well. The last chapter represents the analysis itself. The notion of polarity and great powers in the system level, the national attributes with domestic influences, and the personalities of two presidents provide the basic aspects contributing to the final explanation.

Česenková, Adéla ; Druláková, Radka (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Petr (referee)
The bachelor thesis explores the sources of thoughts of the Czechoslovak foreign policy after 1989. The first aim of the thesis is to formulate general principles that laid foundations for the foreign policy planning. This is achieved by analysing the ideas of the three principal foreign policy representatives in the years from 1989 to 1992: president Václav Havel, minister of foreing affairs Jiří Dienstbier and prime minister Marián Čalfa. The second aim of the thesis is based on the analysis of the goals of the foreign policy after 1989 that captures the implementation of the respresentatives' sources of thoughts into the foreign policy planning and potential deflections from the original thoughts. In conclusion, majority of the principles formulated on the basis of a synthesis of the representatives' sources of thoughts influenced the foreign policy planning. Some deflections concerning the security cooperation in Europe were noticed.
On Psychological Methods in International Relations
Kocmanová, Markéta ; Jireš, Jan (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
Univerzita Karlova v Praze Filozofická fakulta Ústav politologie Bakalářská práce Markéta Kocmanová Možnosti psychologického zkoumání v mezinárodních vztazích On Psychological Methods in International Relations Abstract The thesis provides an introduction to the employment of theoretical models of general and primarily social psychology while exploring global politics against the background of a holistically conceived dynamic model of the system of international relations. Central focus is directed at the phenomena undermining security stability at the sub-system level, i.e. the genesis of aggression and dynamics of conflict through the concept of perception as well as the dichotomy of collectivistic and individualistic cultures. The practical part performs an in-depth analysis of political radicalization while depicting the mechanisms of the pyramid model of radicalization. The overall theoretical framework is accompanied by a number of illustrative examples of both historical event and current international politics which are presented in relation to the specific actors within the system.
Transformation of the Swedish foreign policy at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s
Vlček, Václav ; Brunclík, Miloš (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the transformation of the Swedish foreign and security policy at the turn of 1980s and 1990s. The main object is to examine the impact of geopolitical changes upon the transformation and reveal new (especially internal) influences which are usually overlooked at the expense of the end of the Cold War. Furthermore, the thesis will concentrate on the Swedish neutrality and its development. The thesis is a case study. The theoretical concept is based on the foreign policy analysis. Several levels of analysis are distinguished - the external (systemic) and the internal (the public, social groups, the government, particular individuals). The levels are examined individually and different theoretical approaches are applied to them. Finally, new findings are merged. The approach to the neutrality is derived from international law and international relations. The thesis concludes that the main transformation of the foreign and security policy led to the Swedish accession to the EU and to the reassessment of the policy of the non- engagement. It was primarily caused by the end of the Cold War but there were also other important influences, for example the Swedish economic crisis, the new non-socialist government and the new prime minister Carl Bildt. On the other hand, the...
The 2008 Russia-Georgia War. Russia's Dilemma
Doležel, Martin ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Střítecký, Vít (referee)
Russian government justified the war with Georgia by a set of normatively-legislative arguments. Intervention in Georgia was in accordance to those arguments legitimate. This rationalization proved to be invalid. Main goal of this diploma thesis was therefore to find Russian motives for the war with Georgia. Our hypothesis was that the reaction to Georgian military operation in South Ossetia was a result of a certain dilemma in Russian government. We used two methodological concepts introduced in the book of Graham T. Allison "Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis" for the analysis. The first model, "rational actor", presumes that countries act in the international relations always rationally. "Rational actor" showed that Russian reaction was a result of the rational choice - Russia evaluated military confrontation with Georgia as the most advantageous alternative. The governments' behavior is in accordance to the second model, "organizational process", always limited by behavior of their parts - organizations. The second model revealed that the Russian reaction was result of activated programs, whose character led to massive military action. Our analysis showed that the model which fits better in the case of finding motives of Russian government for the intervention in Georgia...

Foreign policy analysis of selected countries of the Caspian region
Egorova, Anastassia ; Kochan, Jan (advisor) ; Žalek, Lukáš (referee)
The area around the Caspian Sea is between Europe and Asia and due to its strategic location it has been the place where the interests of world powers intersect for centuries. Moreover, in recent decades, it acquires a new dimension in connection with the local raw material supplies. New players are attracted to the Caspian region in addition to the traditional players, such as China, the United States or the European Union. The aim of this work is to answer the question of the influence of external factors, in particular the relevant external actors, current foreign policy of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan - relatively recently formed independent states bordering the Caspian Sea. The aim of this research is to to outline the actual distribution of powers in the regional system and to estimate local future development in terms of international relations. From the European perspective, the important conclusion of this study is to evaluate the chances of the European Union to achieve its own foreign policy goals and to formulate its strategy towards this (not only) on Caucasus-Central Asian region.
